Everyone has to move at some point, and boy can it be a headache if you aren’t prepared. Here’s some advice to staying sane during your move. This will help you make it to the other side without a panic attack.
As Movers, We Really Understand the Pain Points
Fast-forwarding through your move is not an option, so the only thing you can do is put some helpful advice to use to get through without losing your mind. Whether you are a single person working two jobs or you have a large family with five kids there is never enough time to get everything done before the moving day, especially if you are packing yourself. You have to squeeze a ridiculously long list of tasks into a short time and still remember to take care of everything else.
Preparing for the Move
The first thing you need to do is create a moving checklist. You could try to put one together yourself, or but here is a moving checklist we recommend. Either way it needs to be thorough. The closer you get to the move the more stressed you can expect it to be.
Hire Movers
If you are planning on renting a truck and recruiting a few friends to help with the move you may want to reconsider. By the time you buy food and beverages and pay for the truck, you will have already spent quite a bit of money. Plus, you have to deal with the fear of someone getting hurt or something valuable get broken. To keep your moving bill low, try to be flexible with your moving day. Weekdays are generally cheaper.
Pack an Essentials Box
When the movers leave, you are going to order pizza from Firecrust, Mimi’s Pizzeria, Cane Ross, Eno’s, or Grimaldi’s, as they are known for having the best pizza in the city. When the adrenaline wears off and your energy level plunges, you will be grateful for your essentials box. Inside, you will find a shower curtain, sheets, change of clothes, towels, and anything else you need to get you through at least 24 hours.
Clean First
Ideally, you will get into your new place to clean prior to moving in. Otherwise, clean the bath and kitchen first before you start unpacking.
Use What You Have for Packing Purposes
Packing is a pretty miserable job so start as early as possible. You don’t want to be rushing the week of your move. You can get free moving boxes from office supply stores, bars and restaurants, liquor stores, convenience stores, etc. Use your towels, linens, and clothes to wrap breakables. Hoodies offer great cushioning in the bottom of boxes and balls of socks fill empty space to stop items from moving around.
Put Saran Wrap under lids of toiletries to stop them from leaking. You can also use it to keep jewelry secure against a piece of cardboard or in the jewelry boxes. Take photos of electronics before disconnecting, thaw your fridge the day before, and put hampers, picnic baskets, storage containers, suitcases, and (clean) trash cans to good use, too.
Happy (SANE) Moving!
