The discovery of oil at the turn of the century led to a boom in the region and the establishment of 3 separate towns, all of which were eventually merged into Baytown shortly after WWII. In 1916, the first offshore oil platform in Texas and the second in the United States was built at Baytown by former Governor Ross Sterling under Humble Oil. Humble later built the Baytown refinery which was eventually acquired by Exxon. Baytown has long been a center for oil refining and industrial manufacturing.

The Baytown Community
Residents of Baytown have a variety of cultural, educational and recreational events. The city is the home to the first county library in all of Texas, funded with a gift from Sterling. It is also home to Wallisville Heritage Park, the Baytown Historical Museum and the Baytown Little Theater, which performs year round and is one of the oldest community theaters in the country. In addition, visitors can tour the San Jacinto Battleground, the retired Battleship Texas, and the Port of Houston offers free tours. There is even a local winery/vineyard and a racetrack complex which is particularly popular for drag racing.
Baytown is a wonderful place to call home, with over 950 acres of public parks. These include water parks, skate parks, soccer fields, baseball parks and nature preserves, among others. It all makes for a city that is lush, green and family friendly. Lee College was founded in 1934 and still serves students today, with quality education and associates degrees, and many transfer agreements with four year institutions. The Baytown Sun focuses on local news, entertainment, sports and business.
