Whether you’re a Houston native or just spending the holidays here, you’ll find that there’s plenty to do from late November to early January. From millions of twinkling Christmas lights to fireworks at midnight, you can fill up your days with holiday fun. So grab your best friends and your closest family members and head to one–or all!–of these local events and attractions this holiday season.
Magical Winter Lights
Looking for a ton of sparkling lights this holiday season? A short trip south to La Marque will ensure you find what you’re looking for, thanks to the Magical Winter Lights event. From November 16 to January 6, you can enjoy a festive, family-friendly atmosphere that features Christmas lights, lanterns, carnival rides, games, pictures with Santa, acrobatic acts, a dinosaur exhibit, and much more. Needless to say, there’s something for everyone!
The Holidays at Moody Gardens
Galveston’s Moody Gardens has plenty to do year round, but in the winter, it turns into holiday central. That’s because between November 17 and January 6, you can find everything from the Festival of Lights–which is a mile long!–to Ice Land, which includes numerous animals carved from ice and even an arctic slide. There’s also ice skating, 3D holiday movies, train rides, hot chocolate and more.
Sugar Light Holiday Lights
As you may have noticed, some of the best holiday events in the Houston area are in the suburbs that surround the big city. Sugar Land Holiday Lights is one example. When you attend this holiday event on any evening between November 23 and January 1, you’ll be greeted by a sparkling winter wonderland filled with 2.5 million lights, plenty of vendors selling holiday goodies and a Santa meet-and-greet! So gather your friends and family, buy tickets online and then head to Constellation Field in Sugar Land for this fun holiday event.
Christmas Village at Bayou Bend
If you prefer to stay in the heart of Houston for the holidays, you’ll want to check out the Christmas Village at Bayou Bend. Between December 14 and January 5, you can visit this historic mansion to go on holiday-themed tours that include everything from live actors to tons of decorations. You can also stand back and admire a 12-foot tall Christmas tree, sled down a snow slide, take part in a scavenger hunt, make Christmas crafts and listen to live holiday music. No matter which activities you choose, this Houston holiday event is sure to put you in a festive mood!
New Year’s Eve at CityCentre
If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve celebration for the whole family, head to CityCentre in the Memorial City neighborhood of Houston. If you have little ones, they can participate in the Noon Year’s Eve countdown to noon that day. Then at 9:30 pm, you can come back to start the party leading up to the countdown to midnight. There will be live music and dancing at this outdoor event, and a one-minute long firework show at midnight. If you want to hang out a little longer as you ring in the New Year in Houston, you can always head to one of the bars or restaurants in the area and party like it’s 2019!
